The Wake

August 4 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The Wake2Wake:
(v.) 3. to become cognizant or aware of something; awaken; waken
(n.) 1. a watch or vigil held beside the body of someone who has died, sometimes
accompanied by ritual observances including eating and drinking.
2. the track of waves left by a ship or other object moving through the water

The tracks, the waves that hit us as we move are the elements of anti-blackness. Police brutality, education inequity, food insecurity, Mass incarceration and school to prison pipelines, etc.

The element of a “wake” being a segment of the program discussing police brutality with pieces dedicated to lives taken such as Tamir Rice, Aiyana Stanley Jones, Rekiya Boyd, Walter Scott,…and doing so in a way that humanizes them. Eulogizes them discussing their life and their light as opposed to devaluing them as another body.

Therefore, this event will be comprised of activists, artists, actors, dancers and musicians willing to construct pieces either deconstructing an overall system of anti-blackness, or as an ode to a black life taken by police brutality.
